Foxwoods Casino is deadlined to open by May 2011 in Philadelphia, but has been experiencing issues raising the funds needed to proceed with building on schedule.
The developers of the casino project are facing tight time constraints enforced by the state, forcing them to consider placing a temporary slot parlor at its South Philadelphia site along the Delaware River.
Since the proposal of the Foxwoods project, developers have spent $160 million dollars to purchase property and develop building plans. Meanwhile, city officials and activist have pressured them to move the casino to the old Strawbridge & Clothier flagship store and then back to South Philly due to the lack of progress in the Center City.
With the development sitting in limbo for months, the primary investors feel that a temporary facility that could later be demolished may be more cost efficient than the proposed interim casino which would have essentially served as the first phase of the multi-step project.
The Foxwoods investors, comprised of 13 local entrepreneurs, sports figures and the Mashantucket Pequot tribe of Connecticut have been given until the end of November to finalize their decision and petition the gaming board for approval of the change.
