When the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, opened in Pennsylvania in May 2009, local officials reached an agreement to share the slot machine revenues.
Now that the Casino has moved forward with plans to include table games, county officials are lobbying to rewrite the agreement.
Northampton County Executive John Stoffa feels they are entitled to keep the additional profits from the table games, to help combat the $1 million tax increase the county faces.
State Senator Lisa Boscola, Northampton County, is willing to renegotiate if the neighboring cities of Easton and Fountain Hill in Lehigh County are included, however, it is undecided who should pay their shares.
The current agreement divides the profit 50–50 between the counties and then is funneled town to Bethlehem and Allentown. The proposed agreement on the table, calls for 80 -20 spilt in favor of Northampton.
State Senator Pat Browne, Lehigh County said lawmakers are working on the details of the plan and that it should reflect the philosophy that the negative impact of a casino in not bound by municipal lines therefore table gaming revenues should be shared much like the existing plan governing slots.
