Beacon Hill has been experiencing mounting pressure to expand gambling in Massachusetts as the state experiences declining revenues in the face of the economic recession.
Legislation in Massachusetts are among many other states exploring the option of casinos to add an influx of jobs through construction and casino staffing, as well as increase state revenue through the tax rates imposed on gaming developments.
Several state leaders including Governor Deval Patrick, Senate President Therese Murray and House Speaker Robert DeLeo are pushing to license resort style casinos for the first time in Massachusetts.
A public hearing will be held next week to provide residents a chance to weigh in on more than a dozen gaming bills that also include creating a network of video lottery terminals and allowing slot machines at local racetracks.
Other issues that Legislatures still need to address include the location of the proposed casinos, and the number of licenses the state will be willing to approve.
