Despite the $6 million effort by TruthPAC to peruse voters in Ohio to vote no on Issue 3, Ohio has become the 39th state to legalize gambling.
Governor Ted Strickland and Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman are among some of the government leaders opposed to the Issue and now plan to seek an amendment next year, calling for higher tax rates, putting gaming licenses up for bid and allowing cities to regulate casino locations and operations.
Those opposed to Issue 3, cited the potential for crime and other social impacts as reasons to vote no. Some voter’s also expressed concern that the promises of 34,000 jobs were exaggerated.
Those voting yes, indicated high unemployment rates and the realization that thousands of Ohioans gamble in other states without benefiting their home state as their reasoning.
Unofficial results showed the constitutional amendment voted in by 53 percent. The election marked the fifth time gaming expansion was up for vote, failing 4 times before.
Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert will have the rights to casinos in Cleveland and Cincinnati. His partner on Issue 3, Pennsylvania-based Penn National Gaming Inc., will develop casinos in Toledo and Columbus’ Arena District.
Construction could begin by late 2010, and the new facilities would open in 2012.
