Indiana casino operators have petitioned the state for tax breaks on casino revenue, now that they will be in direct competition with neighboring Ohio casinos.

The gaming industry compares their request to tax breaks given to other companies as part of economic development programs, to build or expand in Indian rather than another state.

Local gambling operations hope that tax breaks would provide them the finances needed for increased promotions to encourage more patrons and ultimately produce additional tax revenue for the state.

Casino tax revenue makes up 5 percent of the states budget, and competing Ohio casino businesses are projected to reduce tax receipts by an estimated $100 million a year.

Governor Mitch Daniels said Friday, that he opposes any tax breaks to Indiana’s casino industry.

However he would be willing to consider eliminating requirements for non moving riverboat casinos to maintain captain and crew and allow existing licensed casinos to build on land.
