The State Gaming Control Board, The American Gaming Association and several lawyers met last week to discuss legal and regulatory issues in the gaming industry. The State Bar of Nevada sponsored the 2009 Gaming Law Conference.

Several panels spoke about the struggles states face to develop revenue sources and suggest that race and sports books could be a solution.

Nevada is currently the only state to offer legal sports wagering. Earlier this year Delaware proposed sports betting at racinos, but was denied by the Court of Appeals after the NFL, MLB, NBA and NCAA filed a motion in opposition.

Delaware, Oregon, Montana and New Jersey are exempt from the legislation banning sports wagering in the U.S, as they have lottery games tied to professional football results.

CEO and President of the American Gaming Association said that movements on gambling issues should not be expected this year as congress addresses Healthcare and Energy policy reform.

Three bills have been introduced to Congress, including Barney Frank’s bill to legalize online betting, Jim McDermott’s companion bill to establish federal taxation on online gambling and Senator Robert Menendez’s bill to legalize and regulate online games of skill, such as poker.
