Gary Kaplan, founder of Betonsports online casino based in the U.K. received his sentencing this week for his role in accepting wagers from U.S. based gamblers.

Online gaming is illegal in the United States, regardless of the location of the site. Betonsports had revenue of $1.25 billion in 2004, of which 98% came from U.S. clients through website transactions.

In 2006 the online gaming operation was issued an order barring the company from doing business in the U.S. $43.7 million was seized from Kaplan’s bank accounts.

Kaplan was arrested in March 2007, after fleeing to the Dominican Republic. He was apprehended on racketeering, conspiracy and other charges, as were other executives of the company, including Kaplan’s siblings.

Kaplan pleaded guilty in August to conspiring to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act and was recently sentenced to 51 months in prison.

Prosecutors have requested that he be given credit for the 31 months he had been in federal custody.
