The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office filed charges on Friday against five people accused of running an illegal gambling operation fronting as a cyber café.
Six employees and more than 45 patrons were arrested in August but further investigation led to additional charges against the five employees who accepted money, issued a swipe card or redeemed players winnings.
A sting operation run between June and August resulted in undercover officers purchasing computer time at the Fortune Cyber Café were they where able to play computer games of chance on any one of 50 computers provided by the café. Winnings were redeemed for cash from a teller.
Further investigations found that earnings were deposited in a bank account owned by the café and then transferred to an account owned by an unnamed Florida based gaming company, who had personal ties with the café owners.
The five employees charged on Friday will face counts of money laundering as well as misdemeanor counts of gambling promotion, gambling and possessing gambling devises in connection with the unlawful casino.
