The looming online gambling ban preventing financial institutions from processing wagers has been extended for another six months. The US Treasury Department and Federal Reserve were pushing for a December 1 implementation date and will now give banks until June 1, 2010 to comply with the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
The bill was passed in 2006 put has been constantly pushed back due to criticism from financial institutions that it would be an enforcement nightmare.
Us Congressman Barney Frank has challenged the ban as an unfair trade restriction and has been lobbying to have it overturned since its inception. Franks proposed bill would void the ban and legalize online gaming for games of skill such as poker.
Frank said in a statement on Friday that they, “deserve a great deal of credit for suspending these midnight regulations promulgated by the Bush administration which would curtail the freedom of Americans to use the Internet as they choose and which would pose unrealistic burdens on the entire financial community. This will give us a chance to act in an unhurried manner on my legislation to undo this regulatory excess by the Bush administration and to undo this ill-advised law.”
