The Mashpee Wampanoags have formed an alliance with a new group of investors to help jump start the tribe’s stalled plans to develop a $1 billion World Class resort style gambling facility in Middleborough, Massachusetts.
Leaders for the tribe announced Sunday that the have negotiated a deal with Arkana Limited, an affiliate of Kien Huat, a subsidiary of Asia’s largest casino operator Genting Group. The gaming giant had financed the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut for the Mashantucket Pequots.
The tribe has agreed to sever ties with investors Sol Kerzner and Len Wolman, who has supported the tribes gaming operations for the past two years and have recently filed bankruptcy for their jointly owned Twin Rivers casino in Rhode Island.
The state Legislature has not yet approved the gaming expansion allowing casino gambling in the state, however if the recent Supreme Court ruling baring Indian tribe’s from operating gaming facilities outside of the reservations is not overturned, locations like Suffolk Downs will get a jump on gaming, making competition harder.
Dennis Whittlesey, the lawyer who helped Middleborough craft its casino agreement with the Wampanoag tribe said he expected to see legislation correcting the decision in the next five or six months.
