Arundel County lawmakers are expected to cast their votes on Monday to finally decide if developer Cordish Cos. will be permitted to construct the state’s marquee slots parlor near Arundel Mills mall.
The outcome of the proposal is far from clear as officials face lobbying political and business interest as well as their constituents. Four council members will need to vote yes in-order for the state to move forward with the slots program approved by Maryland voters more than a year ago. Three of the seven members say they are not sure how they’ll vote.
The council has been struggling with the rezoning issue for the past nine months; however the states slot commission is expected to grant the developer a gambling license tomorrow, just hours before the council is scheduled to vote.
Some commissioners have expressed their desire for the decision to pressure the Council to approve the necessary zoning and move forward with the project.
The site in question has been described as the most lucrative of five potential casino sites and the casino is expected to generate more than $500 million in annual revenue. With almost half earmarked to fund state education and approximately $23 million to county and local impact grants.
