Black Bear Entertainment LLC. has submitted a petition with more than 90,000 signature to state election officials this week in the hopes of forcing a referendum next year to allow a four seasons casino resort in western Maine.

“The voters are ready - ready for economic development,’’ said Peter Martin of Black Bear Entertainment LLC.

In order to get the initiative on the November 2010 ballot, 55,087 valid voter’s signatures needed to be submitted by the February 1st deadline. The number of voter’s required is based on 10% of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial election.

Maine voters have rejected casino initiatives repeatedly since 2003. However back in 2003 voters did approve slot machines near harness racing tracks which paved the way for the Hollywood Slots in Bangor.

Martin said that given the economic conditions and lack of jobs in the state, casino backers are confident that voter’s will pass the the referendum this time around.

Although Governor John Baldacci opposes casino expansion in the state, the proposal would first go to the Legislatures and if rejected or vetoed the bill would be sent to the voters.
