Florida lawmakers rejected another agreement reached by Governor Charlie Crist and the Seminole Tribe to expand gambling operations and raised questions about the blackjack tables the tribe has installed.
Under terms of a prior agreement, the tribe says the blackjack games are legal; however that deal was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2007 after being challenged by members of the senate, who charge they are being operated illegally.
Last year, legislation prepared their own compact proposal to allow card games at four of the casinos, but that proposal was amended by Crist to allow blackjack and other card games at all seven casinos.
Crist’s revised deal also would have brought in more than $50 million a year and $400 million in the final year than that proposed by Legislatures. However, gave the tribe exclusive rights to conduct certain games in exchange for those profits.
Thursday’s vote essentially killed the agreement and the tribes lawyer said, “This is the first time that the tribe feels it needs to turn its attention from attempting to negotiate a contract to its other alternatives.”
The other alternative for the tribe is to request the federal government to decide what games are allowed, during which time the tribe can withhold funds from the state.
