Governor Chris Christie has called for a casino regulatory reform and possible state intervention as a way to save New Jersey’s casino industry.
Although he has not yet endorsed any measures outlined in the January 5th report on gaming and entertainment, some ideas mentioned is to privatize the state lottery and have it work with the states racetracks, which is seeking video lottery terminals that operate like slot machines.
The report also calls for consolidating New Jersey’s declining racing operations.
The report also outlines several reasons other than the recession for the collapse of Atlantic City’s gambling operations including casino smoking bans, out of state competition and the perception of Atlantic City being unsafe and unclean.
The proposal also suggest that the casinos must discard their business models and focus on wealthier guest instead of day trippers to transform the gaming area into an upscale resort destination and develop retail shops, restaurants and entertainment spots.
Another key recommendation made was to streamline the Casino Control Commission and the Division of Gaming Enforcement, which would save the state approximately $20 million to $30 million annually.
