Earlier this month the poker world lost one it’s most extraordinary characters with the passing of Amir Vahedi.

Most remember Vahedi and his sixth place in the 2003 World Series of Poker main event final table. He got there with an aggressive style of play, lots of laughter and a Cuban Cigar hanging out of his mouth.

Vahedi entered the final table with the second biggest stack and the momentum of having won a bracelet two weeks earlier. In the end, though, the pressure of the moment got to him and he was ousted after a series of questionable plays.

Many don’t know about the road that brought him to the world of poker.

He was born in Tehran, Iran and spent his early (adult) years serving in the Iranian Army during the long, devastating Iran-Iraq War.

In an attempt to escape the war, he tried to seek refuge in Pakistan. However, long his perilous trip through Pakistan, he found himself confined in a Afghani prison for many months.

Upon his release, only a forged passport could get him to Germany where as a political refugee, he was allowed to relocate to California, where he had family.

Amir Vahedi tried his hand as a business owner for a while before deciding in 1997 to become a full time poker player.
