Las Vegas has finally gotten the word that they will host the Floyd Mayweather Jr and Shane Mosley fight on May 1 and the MGM Grand.
2010 was off to a disappointing start for boxing followers, Vegas and MGM with the cancellation of several fights.
The March 13 megafight between Mayweather and Pacquiao at the Grand Garden was called off after issues with drug testing were unable to be resolved and then Andre Berto pulled out of the Mosley and Berto fight scheduled for this weekend at the Mandalay Bay.
It may be a small consolation for the state and MGM Mirage’s lost revenue, since the Mayweather-Mosley fight would have been worth several hundred thousand dollars in tax revenue and the Mosley-Berto fight would have netted Nevada approximately $200 thousand, according to Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission.
“This definitely helps,” Kizer said. “We had a tough start, but fights like this can get us back on track for a big year.
Mosley signed the contract Friday, and Mayweather’s signature is imminent. Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s co-manager, said there are no issues that need to be worked out for the fight, which will be televised by HBO Pay Per View.
“Floyd’s excited,” Ellerbe said. “He’s waited 10 years for this opportunity to fight Mosley.”
