The game of poker has never been as popular as it has been in the US over the past several years. As with anything, human or not, waves of controversy usually surround anything that gains fame.

That is where the game is currently, mired in a state of controversy over whether it is a game of skill or one of luck. The agrument has been around since the game came on the scene, but never to the point where legal challenges are taking place.

Two states, Pennsylvania and Colorado, both dismissed criminal cases involving poker when they ruled that the game was one of skill and not luck. The victories in court had many in the poker community believing that they would be precedent setting rulings.

Then, as quickly as they were excited, they were crushed. Another judge in a different county in Pennsylvania ruled that the game was one of skill. That opened the door again for debate.

Eventually, the US government is expected to end the debate by defining poker as a game of skill, but until that happens the debate will grow. Only now, it has moved off the streets and into court rooms across the country.
