A proposed constitutional amendment to allow sports betting in Atlantic City casinos and New Jersey racetracks was approved on Monday with a 4-0 vote.

The vote by the Senate Committee sends the SCR-49 bill to the full Senate for consideration.

If approved by the full Legislature, the issue would be placed on the ballot in November to be decided by state voters.

The proposal would allow for betting on professional, college or amateur sporting events in person, by telephone or online.

New Jersey college teams would be excluded and college games played in the state would also be prohibited.

Senator Jeff Van Drew is a co sponsor for the bill and said the state’s gaming industry needs sports betting to counter strong competition from expanded gambling in Pennsylvania, Delaware and other Northeastern states.

Legalizing sports wagering in the state could generate $100 million in new state revenue and $500 million for the casinos and racetracks, if the federal government eliminates the ban against sports gambling.
