The Huron bank of Potawatomi Indians presented the local revenue sharing board in Emmett Township Michigan with its first payment for almost $2 million on Friday.

The check represents 2% of slot revenue since the August opening of the FireKeepers casino.

The over-sized check came as a surprise to local officials who had predicted their percentage of a full year of operations to generate only $2.5 million.

“It’s really going to help make sure some of the services that may otherwise have been trimmed back, probably won’t have to be as a result of receiving this money,” said Emmett Township Supervisor Gene Adkins.

The FireKeepers Casino was the result of a decade of legal battles between the tribe and the state which ended with a gaming compact dictating that the casino would share winnings with both state and local governments.

While the state will receive 4% of the $97 million brought in between August 5 and December 31, Friday’s check to the sharing board will be divided between six jurisdictions, Calhoun County, Emmett and Athens Townships, the cities of Marshall and Battle Creek, and the tribe to reimburse for costs attributable to the casino or the tribe’s Pine Creek Reservation in Athens.
