Less than two weeks ago, Kansas Lottery officials feared that the opening of an American Indian-run casino might actually crush their own project, but it appears that plans for a casino to the south of Wichita are moving forward.

Executive Director Ed Van Petten said that the lottery had reached a new agreement with the Chisholm Creek partnership on the creation of a $225 million hotel-and-casino complex.

The partnership would build and manage the casino for the lottery, which would own the rights to the gambling and the gambling equipment, down to the dice and cards.

The new contract includes amendments adding a hotel to the project, and a schedule of investments that depend on whether the tribal casino is built nearby.

The deal says that the casino must be built within 18 months of final approval from the state and contain a minimum of 72,000 square feet, 1,300 slot machines, 40 table games and a 200-seat restaurant.

The casino is slated to be in Sumner County, some 20 miles south of Wichita.
