Two brothers appeared in Federal Court on Friday to answer to charges of operating an illegal sports gambling operation.

Federal agents launched a series of raids last year where computers and notebooks were collected according to prosecutors.

Over the course of the investigation, almost a dozen people including patrons of the betting operation were jailed for contempt after refusing to testify before a grand jury.

Michael C. Sansone, 30 and Anthony V. Sansone, 27 appeared together in court to plead guilty to operating a betting business used a toll-free telephone number and an online site, both routed to a room in Costa Rica, to process illegal wagers on sporting events.

As part of the plea agreement, Michael Sanson agreed to forfeit $4 thousand and a laptop seized in the raid.

Two other local men also pleaded guilty earlier this month.

The Sansone brothers are the grandsons of Anthony “Tony Ripe” Civella who according to the FBI, has been the object of federal attention since the late 1950’s for his involvement in bookmaking and ties to organized crime.
