While key industry players wait for a gambling study to recommend that the Australian government overturn an online gambling ban, Party Poker moves into Australia.
Despite facing the possibility of $1.1 million a day in fines, online gaming company Party Poker, registered in Gibraltar is advertising for personnel to head marketing in Australian based out of Sydney to “”leverage the brand at the forefront of the poker market in Australia and New Zealand” and support its goal of ”growing online poker business in Europe with plans to enter the Australasian market”.
The Interactive Gaming Act of 2001 prohibits companies in Australia or overseas to provide online casino games to any person “physically present in Australia”.
However the federal government so far has not made any effort to enforce the ban, allowing offshore companies to ignore it.
The Productivity Commission has recently drafted a report outlining the results of studies on gambling and estimated that Australians have wagered $790 million to offshore companies in 2008; an illegal act under the current law.
The report also says that internet gambling is the fastest growing type of gaming and that wagers from Australians between 2004 and 2008 have tripled.
The Commission’s final report is due next week.
