New York racetracks are looking to the internet to cater to younger gamblers as online wagering becomes an increasingly important tool for the gaming market.
“We’re looking to get the 20-somethings involved in horse racing,” Jason Settlemoir, vice president of racing and simulcast at Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs said. “That’s been the knock against horse racing, that they missed a generation.”
Tioga Downs Casino is working with eBet Technologies Inc to develop an Internet and phone wagering system that would allow users to bet on live harness racing and simulcast races on the premises and horse races at other various tracks that are part of an agreement with Tioga Downs.
While the track hopes the new revenue source will boost its profits, according to Guy Howard, president of The Southern Tier Harness Horsemen’s Association, Tioga has agreed to evenly split all profits generated from the website with the association.
Tioga hopes to launch the site later this year, although at this time the required application has not been submitted to the states Racing & Wagering Board for approval.
However the board is already reviewing a similar application submitted by Catskill Off-Track betting.
