Harrah’s Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana has agreed to pay a neighboring marina for business lost while its new casino barge was being built.
In 2008, the $500 million expansion of the Horseshoe casino caused the marina along Lake Michigan to close for a season and permanently remove some of its boat slips to accommodate the expanding facility.
The Hammond Port Authority claimed that the closure of the marina caused the loss of almost $750,000 from rent as slips were unusable.
According to Hammond Port Authority attorney Kevin Smith, the Horseshoe Casino agreed to pay $1.7 million in damages to resolve the issue.
The agreement also requires the gaming company to continue to pay annual rent payments of more than $7 million to the Port Authority.
