The boarder town of Delmar, Delaware is expected to make a decision on whether to amend town’s zoning ordinance to make it more casino friendly.
A public hearing and second reading on ordinance No. 155, which would add the word “casino” to the language of the Delmar’s, Planning and Zoning code, is scheduled to take place during a monthly joint council meeting.
The idea to look into making the change was brought about when Wilmington developer James Rostocki approached the town and discussed his interest in building a casino off Route 13 near Delaware International Speedway.
“I’m looking forward to a favorable outcome,” said Rostocki. “It has come to the council several times and has been thoroughly looked at.”
Delmar straddles two states, Delaware and Maryland. While there are supporters and opponents on both side of the boarder, some opposition has been voice on the Maryland side.
“This is a family-oriented town, and that is my objection,” said Marlena Hodgins, a former Delmar, Md., commissioner. “We need to do more for children, including teenagers, and gambling does not enter into that into town.”
Her concern centers around the increase of crime that comes with a gambling element.
