Legislation that would have allowed Indiana’s floating casinos on Lake Michigan and the Ohio River to move inland, fell in a 57-42 vote in the State House of Representatives.

A bipartisan vote struck down a proposal that would have let the state’s casinos expand and let maritime gambling operations in Lake County, East Chicago and Hammond, relocate to new land-based locations.

Supporters said moving casinos inland, particularly in the Lake County on Lake Michigan, would make them more accessible and attractive to gamblers and help those operations stave off competition from other states including Ohio, which voted last November to allow four casinos there.

They argue that land-based casinos are needed to protect the nearly $900 million in revenue the state gets from casinos.

Indiana’s economy depends so much on gambling revenue and opponents are concerned about how far the state would go in expanding casino legislation.

“It’s a march that won’t be done until there are slot machines in the kindergarten rooms,” said House Minority Leader Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis. “The only item we’ve said no to so far are land-based casinos.”
