The approved developer of Maryland’s largest slot parlor has filed a lawsuit against the Anne Arundel County Board of Elections to block the use of a petition to get a referendum on the ballot.
The developer was approved to build a 4,750 machine slot parlor, however the Citizens Against Slots at the Mall is trying to block development.
The suit was filed by Cordish Cos’s parent company PPE Casino Resorts Maryland LLC asking for an injunction to stop the petition process.
The suit contends that officials have refused to address issues of fraud as reported by Cordish claiming “a pattern of insertions, alterations, entries and signatures not signed by the person it purports to be”.
The coalition submitted 23,702 signatures to the board of elections; 18,790 signatures were required to place the referendum on the November ballot.
According to the Boards attorney, as of Tuesday about half of the signatures have been thrown out and approximately 13 thousand has been verified.
The suit also claims that collectors made “false, misleading and inflammatory statements” about the content and effect of the petition” leading the signers to believe it would prevent the slots parlor at the Mall, however the petition “would shut down efforts to put slots anywhere in Anne Arundel County”.
The suit also claims that the coalition has received 99.76% of their funding from the Maryland Jockey Club, who has a “substantial financial interest” in overturning the gaming license.
According to the lawsuit. “The election board has refused to address these glaring irregularities, instead taking the position that absent a court order requiring it to fulfill its statutory duties, the election board will limit its role to a strictly magisterial or administrative function.”
