Year after year, legislators in Hawaii have thought about a plan to introduce casinos in the Aloha State, however, it’s always been shot down by opponents.
This session of the State Legislature is no different.
In light of Hawaii’s economic downturn, the Committee on Finance held a public hearing on House Bill 2251, calling for a five-year license to a casino gambling operation in Honolulu and creating a wagering tax.
However, after an overwhelming outcry of public opposition, spearheaded by the Honolulu Police Department, the Honolulu Prosecutor’s and state Attorney General’s offices, the committee deferred the casino gambling bill on Wednesday.
According to State House Finance Chairman Marcus Oshiro, the move to legalize casino gambling is dead.
Lobbyists for gambling interests said that casinos could generate more than $500 million in income, attract new visitors and capture money from residents that travel to Nevada gamble.
Opponents argued that any potential gain from gambling revenues would be outweighed by the long-term detrimental effects of gambling.
