Jamaican Parliament began debating two bills to pave the way for Casino Gaming on on the island.
The Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Audley Shaw is behind both the Casino Gaming Bill and the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Bill that are in front of lawmakers this week.
The bills are apart of a policy determination by the administration to move towards enabling gaming as an important development strategy to increase the tourism offerings of Jamaica.
“It would bring a level of diversification to the product and, indeed, attract a higher level of spenders and their level of investments,” Minister of Tourism, Hon Edmund Bartlett said.
The Casino Gaming Act provides the regulatory framework for entering the gambling industry.
The measure allows for casinos to operate only within approved integrated resort developments were gaming is only one component of the overall activity.
Shaw said that while only three integrated resort development orders would be considered for approval, the Minister may increase the number, by order subject to affirmative resolution.
The Betting Gaming and Lotteries Act enables the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission to regulate the industry more effectively to ensure that operations are conducted fairly and remain free from criminal elements.
“We support the Bill because the advent of Casino Gaming will see a new product emerging on the tourism landscape. A product that will significantly enrich the quality of our offerings, and will go along to increase arrivals into the country but, more importantly, increase our spend,” Bartlett said.
