According to State Lawmakers, Iowa could become the first state in the country to allow online gambling.
Apparently, they feel that if the state wants to be on the leading edge, now is the time to do it.
Representative Doug Struyk, a Republican from Council Bluffs, is part of a working group of lawmakers studying gaming issues this session, including Internet gambling.
Struyk, who prefers to use the term, “account deposit wagering,” says that more than 50,000 of his statesmen currently gamble online using unregulated, offshore casinos and may not be getting a fair chance to win.
Because it is unregulated, Struyk said there are concerns that companies offering online poker may be using players with no money in the game to bluff and back other players off their bets.
Struyk said the proposal they’re discussing would regulate the practice through the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission and place caps on wagers.
