A battle has been taking shape in Congress over legislation to legalize online gambling for some time now and the bill is gaining more and more support.
Representative Barney Frank, a Democrat from Massachusetts and chairman of the House Financial Services Committee has been on a mission to lift the ban on online gambling since Republicans pushed through the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) back in 2006.
UIGEA does not specifically ban gambling, but it makes it illegal for banks to process payments to internet casinos.
“Americans ought to be free to do what they want with their own money,” Frank said in an interview this week.
Two of Frank’s newest supporters are Reps. William Lacy Clay and Russ Carnahan from Missouri. The two St. Louis Democrats are now co-sponsors of a bill that would legalize online wagering with an eye toward billions in potential revenue from taxing and regulating Internet wagering sites.
Currently, online gambling remains illegal under an old federal law aimed at bookies using telephones, while Frank’s bill would be aimed at modernizing the law to focus on Internet freedom.
