Harrah’s Entertainment has been told to hire a contractor instead of “having maintenance guys doing work without permits”.
On Thursday the Nevada State Contractors Board reached a settlement with the gaming giant to pay fines totaling $26,000 to close its long standing investigation into illegal remodeling at six Las Vegas hotel-casinos.
The settlement agreement calls for Caesars Palace, Flamingo, Harrah’s , Imperial Palace, Paris Las Vegas and the Rio and a shuttered construction subsidiary to pay fines of $3,000 each plus an additional $5,000 to be jointly paid for the board’s investigation fees.
The investigation found that seven of Harrah’s entities “collectively performed construction or renovation … without obtaining the necessary building permits” between 2004 and 2007. All of which were licensed contractors.
Roman Empire Development, Harrah’s subsidiary contracting firm, and five of the properties voluntarily surrendered their contractor’s license in November 2008.
Caesars Palace and the Imperial Palace are the only two hotels in question that were able to hold onto their licenses.
Dennis Haney, a lawyer for the casino operator told the board that Harrah’s has spend “seven figures” to identify and remedy the portions of remodeling work that failed to meet building codes.
A portion of that “seven figure” cost included the county’s bill for inspections and the hiring of an outside engineering firm to verify the work, as well as hiring a separate general contractor to supervise repairs.
