Legislation allowing Indiana’s riverboat casinos on Lake Michigan and the Ohio River to move inland was withdrawn this week after the House defeated the amendment.

Lawmakers pitched the land-based provisions as a needed economic bailout claiming that the move would make them more accessible and attractive to gamblers and help stave off competition from neighboring states.

Two of Gary’s riverboat operations expressed an interest in relocating to land alongside heavily traveled Interstates 80-94.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s dead,” House sponsor Rep. Bill Crawford said “I don’t want my name attached to anything that’s unfair.”

Opponents of the bill said that land-based casinos represented a further expansion of gambling in Indiana.

Supporter Rep. Charlie Brown said that although the measure appears dead for this session that perhaps it could find a home in another bill.

“We’ve been very creative in the past,” he said.

Instead, the House approved a measure to shift some of the tax burden from two central Indiana horse racing tracks with slot machines but not other casinos.

The horse track tax amendment passed 49-47 shifting some of the tax burden from “racinos” in Anderson and Shelbyville to the state’s horse racing industry.
