While the exact details seem to be changing every day, negotiations between the State of Florida and the Seminole Indian Tribe appear to be moving forward toward a deal that would expand gambling and end the tribe’s monopoly on blackjack and other table games.

According to sources close to the situation, the main idea being talked about by both sides would see the tribe paying the state about $150 million a year for five years and have exclusive operation of the table games in South Florida.

And if the Legislature allows horse tracks and parimutuels to operate blackjack and table games, the payments to the state would be reduced but continue on slot machines for the next 20 years.

The payments would end if the state approved casino-style video lottery terminals or other casino games outside of Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

“I think we’re very close,” said Rep. Will Weatherford. “I think we’ll have an agreement that we can work with.”

Lawmakers are working feverishly to get a deal done in time for lawmakers to start counting on the cash this session.
