Florida Legislature will consider the impact of Vegas style casinos on the state’s tourism industry and economy today before continuing to draft a gaming compact with the Seminole Tribe.

The House committee will hear a report, from a legislative economist, on the revenue potential of expanding gaming in the state to non-tribal casinos, followed by a presentation from mega casino operator Las Vegas Sands Corp.

Executives from Sands will propose that the state create a new class of gambling offerings in areas from Tampa to South Florida, to add competition to the tribe and boost the state’s tourism and the economy.

The proposal calls for resorts to agree to devote no more than 10% of its floor space to casino games and the state would limit competition to four.

The idea behind resort style casinos is to attract international convention business from South American and Europe.

While Sands admits that the proposal would add competition to the Seminole Tribe, who have been illegally operating table games within their casinos and have not been able to agree on provisions in the state’s gaming compact, they also propose that pari-mutuels be permitted to operate slot machines to avoid being in direct competition with the resorts.

“They can survive with expanding games under this model,” said Nick Iarossi, the Sands’ Tallahassee lobbyist.
