The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine hopes to add a measure to the November ballot seeking approval for casinos in eastern and western Maine as well as table games for Hollywood Slots in Bangor.
The plan is intended to add an alternative to a proposal already slated for the ballot to add a Four Seasons Resort and Casino in Oxford County.
Rep. Donald Soctomah, the Passamaquoddy tribal representative to the Legislature said that the tribe has been attempting to gain authorization for a casino for the past 18 years, while voters continue to approve slot parlors and other casino initiatives.
Under the tribal proposal, voters will be asked to approve competing measures, seeking authorization for both the Four Seasons project, a racing casino to be owned by the tribe and the addition of poker and other table games at Hollywood Slots.
With the Four Seasons measure prohibiting new gambling facilities within 100 miles if its site, forcing Penn to obtain voter approval for table games and changing the formula for dividing tax revenues from the casino Penn National Gaming says that are “open to all options” on the competing measure.
If the tribe’s ballot initiative is approved by the Legislature, the tribe’s plan could dramatically change this fall’s political debate over whether to expand gambling in Maine.
