Opponents of a casino development planned for Arundel Mills Mall filed a lawsuit this week in response to a lawsuit filed by developer Cordish Cos.

Last month the developer filed a motion to stop a petition drive lead by Stop Slots at the Mall to get a referendum on November’s ballot asking voters to approve the gaming project.

Cordish Cos. claimed that the county Board of Elections has overlooked fraud, alleging that the petition’s organizers forged signatures and mislead voters.

Alan Rifkin, the lead attorney for the coalition said the lawsuit is aimed at intervening with the Cordish Cos’s suit with the intent to seek a dismissal contending that PPE Casino Resorts Maryland LLC, the parent company of Cordish Cos., violated a state statute that “prohibits meritless suits brought by large private interests, often real estate developers, to deter ordinary citizens from exercising their political or legal rights”.

In addition, FieldWorks, the company hired by the Maryland Jockey Club to help collect signatures, has filed a separate motion to intervene.
