The recent “competing measure” proposed to a Maine Legislative panel to put three casino proposals into a single ballot question has been denied this week.
The Legislature’s Legal and Veteran Affairs voted 9-4 against the measure that would have allowed voters to approve all three casino plans in Bangor, Oxford and Washington County, and would have been presented as an alternative to Black Bear Entertainment’s plans for a four-season casino resort in Oxford.
The proposal had three components, the resort casino in Oxford already proposed by Black Bear Entertainment; a combination casino-racetrack, or racino, on Passamaquoddy land in Washington County and the addition of table games at Hollywood Slots in Bangor.
Despite the committee’s rejection, representatives of the groups, as well as committee members who voted in favor of the proposal said they will continue to seek support for the three-pronged measure in the full Legislature.
“It’s not something that we are going to walk away from at this point,” said Governor Bill Nicholas with the Passamaquoddy Tribe’s Indian Township reservation.
While the committee denied the competing measure saying there wasn’t enough time to deliberate on the details, they did vote, however, in favor of putting the Oxford County citizen’s initiative on the ballot in November.
The House and Senate must vote on both measures in order for them to appear on the ballot.
