As a Macon County judge issues a new order barring Alabama governor’s task force on illegal gambling from raiding Victoryland casino indefinitely, the state’s Attorney General announced that he will take over the task force and order a halt to raids of electronic bingo casinos until a court rules whether the machines are legal.
King says he will use his authority as the state’s top law officer to assume control, remove Tyson and ask that all evidence collected by the task force be turned over within 24 hours.
Governor Bob Riley continues to argue that the casinos are operating illegal slot machines as electronic bingo machines, while King says he intends to initiate several court cases on the legality of electronic bingo machines that have been operating in non-Indian gambling halls in Macon, Lowndes, Jefferson, Houston and Greene counties.
John Tyson appointed to the task force by the governor has said that he has been ordered to fight Attorney General Troy King in court, as the governor believes King “is determined to do whatever it takes to protect the gambling bosses.”
Following the announcement, two casinos that have been closed to prevent the raids and seizure of gaming machines said they will reopen.
White Hall Entertainment Center in Lowndes County will reopen at noon Wednesday while Country Crossing at Dothan says they will announce their re-opening in the coming days.
“It gives a lot of relief to the industry and a lot of relief to the families about their jobs,” said Senator Bobby Singleton who has vowed to block a raid on Greenetrack in Greene County.
