A grassroots citizens group has been formed to support a resort casino proposed by Mohegan Sun and other economic growth opportunities in the town of Palmer, Massachusetts.
“Citizens for Palmer Jobs & Economic Growth” has approximately 35 members and has been formed to show prospective companies that there are people who want more business in Palmer, as “thousands” of manufacturing jobs have been lost over the years due to companies closing.
“The primary objective of the group is to offer support to current and future jobs and economic growth initiatives underway including, but not limited to, the planned development of a destination resort casino in Palmer” says spokesperson Laurie A. Rocco.
Legislation is expected to be filed soon regarding the legalization of casinos in Massachusetts.
If Mohegan Sun is allowed to develop, plans will include a hotel, restaurants, shops, swimming pool, golf and gaming and create an estimated 1,000 construction jobs and 2,000 permanent jobs.
The state could also realize over $100 million in taxes and licensing fees capturing a large portion of the estimated $800 million a year that Massachusetts residents spend at Connecticut resorts.
