North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey has asked city officials to conduct a study on the pro’s and con’s of boat based casinos.
According to recent news reports, the Mayor will use the study to consider allowing gaming operations to be conducted on boats sailing from its docks, to try to boost local revenue.
The mayor has expressed the interest as an opportunity to deal with lower revenue collections because of the recession and says that these vessels will be no different than cruise ships and gambling would begin only after the boats leave state waters.
The study should be completed within two months and will include information gathered from areas that already operate such vessels including Little River north of Myrtle Beach and Brunswick, Ga.
In 2005 South Carolina lawmakers allowed local governments to decide whether or not to allow cruise ships in their ports.
