As Maryland struggles to find qualified casino operators for a slots program passed by voters in 2008, the state Senate advanced a measure aimed at attracting potential suitors.
The Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort in Western Maryland is expected to be reopened to bidders in the near future. The site drew no qualified bidders in February 2009.
The bill offers the operator 35.5% of the proceeds for the first five years, compared to the 33% available to other operators throughout the site. The deal is contingent on the operator purchasing the existing lodge at the site from the state.
Another incentive includes permitting slot machines in the lodge until the casino is constructed.
The measure has not been considered by the House of Delegates yet, however is expected to be voted on by the Senate on Monday.
