The Arizona Senate has squashed a measure to help the city of Glendale prevent a casino proposed by the Tohono O’odham Nation.
Although House Bill 2297 made it through the House earlier this month, Senate President Bob Burns did not schedule the legislation for a hearing putting an end to the bill.
“I’m not sure this is something we should be involved in,” Senate President Bob Burns said. “This is a fight between the Tohono O’odham Nation and the city of Glendale.”
The bill would have allowed city government’s greater ability to annex land in unincorporated areas outside of its borders.
Though not restricted to Glendale, the bill was aimed at blocking the tribe’s efforts to develop a $500 million casino on land purchased by the tribe in 2003.
The tribe, who opposed the bill, has petitioned the U.S. Interior Department to deem the land as part of its reservation under a 1983 federal law that allows land to be replaced.
The tribe has also filed a lawsuit against the government asking officials to rule on the application after several delays.
