Only weeks after casino operator MGM Mirage has agreed to sever ties with Atlantic City due to gaming regulators suspicions that their Macau partner was “unsuitable”, Reuters reports that rival casino operator Las Vegas Sands has also been linked to organized crime.

The report was released yesterday alleging that court transcripts from a case tried in Hong Kong last year connected the gaming company’s Macau operation Sands Macau to the leader of the Wo Hop To organized crime group, Cheung Chi-tai.

The story says that four men were convicted of conspiracy to commit bodily harm and a fifth of soliciting a murder of a dealer suspected of helping a patron cheat millions of dollars from the casino on the order of Cheung.

It continues to say that a witness and regular gambler at the casino testified that Cheung was in charge of a VIP room and was a major investor in a casino junket used to bring wealthy clientele to the regions gambling halls.

Sands issued a statement saying that “to our knowledge, Mr. Cheung Chi Tai is not listed as a director or shareholder with any of the gaming promoters the company uses in Macau.”.

Sands also defended themselves from the allegations by saying that they maintain management of all VIP rooms, though acknowledging that they work with gaming promoters, called casino junkets to attract customers.

The report raises questions if Las Vegas Sands will soon face similar consequences as MGM, while gaming officials statements in the report were not disclosed the article read that the situation “would be of concern to Nevada authorities”.
