According to a new study’s findings, Rhode Island Casino are heavily dependent on Massachusetts residents and the money they are spending gambling.

The study by Professor Clyde Barrow of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s Center, found that spending at out-of-state casinos in 2009 by Massachusetts residents increased by 5.3 percent over 2008.

Therefor, Ocean State casino’s are extremely interested in what neighboring Massachusetts does with gambling legislation.

“Slot machines at southeastern Massachusetts racetracks will be devastating to Rhode Island gaming revenues,” said Barrow. “Recapturing significant Massachusetts spending at Twin River and Newport Grand, and possibly capturing some Rhode Islander spending from their home state racinos.”

Barrow estimates that Bay State gamblers contributed $133 million to the Rhode Island treasury last year. His conclusions are based on a license plate survey of 14,761 private automobiles at the Twin River track and slot parlor, and 3,926 at Newport Grand.

From this count, Barrow concludes that 47.5 percent of Twin River’s customers and 44.6 percent of Newport Grand’s come from Massachusetts.
