The Alabama State Senate voted 21 to 13, the minimum needed, to pass legislation that would protect electronic bingo games from raids, tax them and regulate them.

The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Roger Bedford, D-Russellville, said that the legislation got a second chance. in no small part, because of Alabama’s financial problems.

“We need the hundreds of millions of dollars of voluntary revenue that will come from electronic bingo,” he said.

Winning in the Senate is not the end of the fight for this bill. This proposed constitutional amendment must be approved by the House and then Alabama voters in a referendum on November 2nd.

The bill is also strongly apposed by Governor Bob Riley’s office. According to Riley, this bill is “the most corrupt piece of legislation ever considered by the Senate.”

Electronic bingo has become one of the most heated issues in all of Alabama since the governor formed a task force against gambling and accused electronic bingo casinos of operating illegal slot machines.

Opponents and proponents agreed the bill faces a tough time in the near future before any real change comes to pass.
