Rep. Jim McDermott is expected to introduce legislation on Thursday to tax online gambling and send the proceeds into the foster care system.
According to McDermott’s plan, taxes in the bill could raise $30 billion over 10 years in new state tax revenue and analysts estimate about $42 billion over 10 years, would go to foster care programs.
This new legislation is an an updated version of McDermott’s bill of last year.
“The major reason is to make it possible for states to have access to online gambling revenue,” McDermott to his fellow members of Congress. “I wanted to help out foster kids. I have watched them always get the short end of the stick.”
Of course, the bill has the full support of the online gambling industry. Proponents believe this could help create new jobs and bring in new government revenue where it is sorely lacking.
On the other side of the issue are conservative christian groups that have lobbied hard against gambling. They were joined by professional sports leagues, which also oppose legalizing online gambling.
