Maine Legislatures continue to debate on competing measures to the citizen initiated Oxford Casino, which was originally recommended to be a measure requesting a straight up or down vote in November.
The Full House however has but its support behind a competing measure that calls for table games at the Hollywood Slots in Bangor as well as two casinos operated by the states Indian tribes.
“This measure presented here today I do not believe provides a real policy choice for the people of Maine,” said state Rep. James Martin referring to the Oxford proposal.
Martin suggested that a more measured approach should be taken when it comes to assessing the impact of expanded gambling.
Martin recommended that a pilot project, combined a moratorium on expanded casinos for two years “so that we can look at and analyze the impact of having a casino in the state, understanding the impact, setting up the regulatory infrastructure for the table games, and report back to the Legislature in two years with recommendations of setting a policy in our state of how we’re going to expand gaming, so that it isn’t region against region, or whichever group is able to gather enough signatures.”
The amendment expands on a proposal earlier suggested by the tribes to allow the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes to each operate 50 slot machines and give Hollywood Slots in Bangor the right to run table gambling games such as craps, roulette and poker.
The state would then make a decision on expanding gambling in other areas if the state.
If the amendment is approved it would appear on the ballot as a competing measure against the Oxford proposal.
