As the Maryland Lottery struggle to get slot parlors up and running, the Board of Public Works postpone a vote on a contract aimed at allowing the state to begin purchasing slot machines in advance of two Maryland slots parlors opening this fall.
The high costs and opposing ideas on how to acquire the machines forced the board to delay the vote until Wednesday.
At stake is a master contract proposed by the Lottery that would lock the state into an agreement with nine approved gaming manufacturers with a cap of $800 million being spent over a 10 year period. The contract would allow Lottery officials to purchase the 15,000 slot machines for an average of $53,333 each by creating subcontracts with any of the approved manufactures and eliminating the need to gain Board approval for each purchase.
Members of the lottery had hoped that the contract would enable them to get slot machines into gaming facilities more quickly.
Under Maryland law the state will purchase and own all the gaming machines in the states five privately owned casinos.
