The Nevada Gaming Control Board has reported that gambling winnings were up by almost 14% for February.
Frank Streshley, chief of licensing and taxation for the control board said the increase shows signs “that we’ve either hit bottom or will be slowly climbing out”.
The Super Bowl and the Chinese New Year are being attributed to the increase. The eventful calendar for the month attracted high rollers to the Strip.
Casinos on the strip won $946.6 million compared with $831 million in the same period in 2009 when the Chinese New Year and the Friday and Saturday preceding the Super Bowl were in January.
Wagers reached $11.7 billion, with $8.9 billion bet on slot machines and $2.8 billion on table games.
Baccarat saw an increase of nearly 130% to $1.2 billion in wagers and 258% to $206.10 million in winnings.
Elsewhere, casinos in northern Nevada’s Washoe County reported winning $60.9 million, up 2.7% for the first monthly increase in 32 months, in Reno the $43.9 million was an increase of 4%.
